Summer camping is all about fun in the sun, and the Southeast is one of the best places to make the most of the warm summer months. The American Southeast is loaded with oceanfront campsites, historic cities and mountain vistas that rival the high peaks in the West. Even better, many of the most scenic places to visit remain uncrowded in the summer months, so you can relax at your special place in the mountains or by the sea.

Tsali Recreation Area — Bryson City, North Carolina

The Great Smoky Mountains offer some of the most precious views in the country, and the Tsali Recreation Area remains a hidden gem in the scenic mountains of Western North Carolina. Your family will never complain of boredom when you’re out hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing and boating among tree-covered mountain peaks.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore — Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

North Carolina’s Outer Banks offer some of our country’s most breathtaking beaches. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is arguably the most beautiful place to camp along the entire stretch of barrier islands. Salt marshes, starry skies, abundant wildlife, uncrowded beaches and the famous Cape Hatteras lighthouse mean there’s no chance you’ll go home disappointed.

Nearly 20 campgrounds dot the Outer Banks, and many of them are RV-friendly. We recommend the Cape Hatteras KOA, which offers 280 RV sites, a hot tub, pool, laundry, WiFi and cozy beach cabins.

James Island County Park — Charleston, South Carolina

Enjoy a combination of historic city life and relaxing beach days when you camp at the James Island County Park in Charleston, S.C. The park is planted between historic downtown Charleston and Folly Beach, so you can spend days soaking in the sun and nights shopping and dining at some of the best venues the South has to offer.

The James Island County Park features power at all sites, an activity center, clean bathhouses, laundry facilities, grills, picnic tables, free WiFi and a camp store, so you can pull in and feel at home immediately.
