Airstream’s Unique Start
The first Airstream camper trailer was built in 1929 by Wally Byam, although it didn’t look much like Airstreams do today. The camper was a tent-like creation that was constructed on the chassis of a Model T, and it didn’t fare well in the elements. Wally later replaced his tent with a teardrop-shaped shelter that contained an ice chest and a stove for more camping convenience. Wally took on so many inquiries about his contraption, that he decided to create a business.
Wally’s goal as he created the Airstream company in 1931 was to construct a camper that was easy (and light) to tow behind any car or truck. Even more, he wanted to be able to provide travelers with top-notch accommodations wherever they went. From the get-go, Airstreams were meticulously designed to ensure every nook and cranny was practical, comfortable and useful.
